A poker player needs to be well-observant to play poker online with the strategies to be a consistent winning player.
Throw Starting Hands
If you receive the following hands in Omaha Hi-Lo, you need to fold the cards.
- Quads- J J J J
- 4 High Cards- K K J J2 High 2 Low- K Q 5 6
- Triple 3s through Triple Ks- 7 7 7 X
- Lowest Card is 4 to 9 Paired or Unpaired i.e 47 JJ, 56TK etc.
Don’t Play High Hands
Many players in Omaha Hi-Lo game try to win the hands that are negative expected value. A hand like 8-9-Q-J double suited is a great hand and a coin flip with AA hands. It is a terrible hand in Omaha as it is drawing high with no shot for the low. These high cards cannot be good low cards. When you are playing poker, try to win where all the pots are raked at 50 percent with no cap. Don’t risk much amount when high cards fall in your hand as the high cards have a low return on the investment. So you can drop from the starting hands range without losing the value. It is one way to learn the game and to play like a pro.
Determining the Low
Identifying the nut-low is a difficult aspect of Omaha. In order to determine which player has the low hand, compare the highest card in the hand. The low ones are counted from the top down. If a player is holding the highest card 8 is not better than 7. The player who is holding 8 is considered the worst low hands. Hand like 8-4-3-2-A (an 8 low) will lose to a player with 7-6-4-3-2 (7 low). Similarly, all 7 hands are worse than 6 hands. The low ones will be the players with five lowest unpaired cards. The best low hand is 5-4-3-2-A or A-2-3-4-5 and the worst is 4-5-6-7-8. A hand like A-2-2-3-4 will not qualify as the twos are paired. Flushes and straights don’t affect the low. If there is no possible low hand, the player with the highest hand will win the whole pot. An ace works as the best card on both ends of pot. This is the key card to make a nut low and a kicker value card in the high card of the pot.
Manage the Bankroll
Bankroll preservation should be your top priority. Many poker players who play Omaha with the same buy-in as they play in Texas Holdem. It is suggested to play Omaha at a higher stakes table than Holdem as the pots in the game have higher value than the pots played in Holdem. As the pots are split between the two winners, the player should double the stake limit in the split pot game. In order to manage the bankroll in Omaha, you should not bring all your money to the table when playing poker online games. If you are playing Omaha Hi-Lo tournaments, make sure you have the qualifying skill set.
